Humana is one of 15 recipients of the 2013 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, the Department of Defense’s highest recognition given to employers for exceptional support of Guard and Reserve employees. The 15 recipients, chosen from nearly 3,000 companies that were nominated across the U.S., will be honored at a ceremony on September 26 in Washington, D.C.

“I commend and thank the 15 recipients of the 2013 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award for providing exceptional support to our Citizen Warriors,” said Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. “So many of our nation’s employers are finding ways to contribute to our nation’s security, but these employers stand out for their commitment to our Guardsmen and Reservists. They have the gratitude and thanks of the entire Department of Defense.”

“Humana is honored to be included as one of the distinguished recipients of the 2013 Freedom Award, and remains committed to supporting our servicemen and women who give so much every day to this nation,” said Tim McClain, President of Humana Government Business.

Humana was nominated for the honor by an Army National Guard member, who noted that Humana supports its military employees by sending hundreds of care packages and letters from all levels of management to deployed employees.

Humana has a long history of supporting the military community, including being one of the first to answer President Obama’s 2011 challenge to U.S. companies to hire 1,000 veterans and/or their spouses over three years. That goal was reached ahead of schedule, and Humana made a new commitment to hire another 1,000 veterans and/or spouses.

“We are at 22 percent of our new goal, hiring 1,222 veterans and their spouses since the program began in 2011,” said Kevin Stakelum, Humana Talent Acquisition Director and leader of the Veteran/Spouse Hiring Initiative.  “We have found that the service men and women and their spouses have provided unique skills, leadership and value to our company and our customers. We appreciate the commitment and sacrifices that they have made for all of us and will continue to aggressively recruit from this important community.”
